Mise en-scène explanation

Mise en-scène explanation

Location and Props:
These are usually set in isolated and dark places, far from civilization. The main themes represented in this type of genre are mystery, evil and death. Therefore the story usually develops in historic and abandoned places like asylums or hospitals, old houses and graveyards where there is most paranormal activity. In this type of genre there are not as many props as in other genres but this is done on purpose as the props that are used always stand out. For example, diabolic symbols on jewelry, dolls, Ouija boards or weapons such as knifes are the most common in supernatural horror films.

Costume and makeup:
In this genre like any other, the costumes are always representative of the character's personality traits and life style. In horror films, they are casual and seem effortless although they actually give hints about the role a character is playing. On the other hand, the villain in Supernatural horror movies, is an entity or diabolical figure, which is why they look deteriorated, the tones they wear are quite pale and their makeup makes them seem like walking corpses.

Blocking and positioning:
Lots of long shots and extreme long shots to establish setting. On the other hand, there is also an extense use of close ups to demonstrate the audience's facial expressions (usually in fear). Also, high angles are included in scenes where the director wants the character to look innocent or vulnerable. And lastly low angles are also used to make people or objects appear as empowered and strong.

Body language and facial expressions:
Certainly, most of the facial expressions used will represent fright and fear. In contrast, the villains may have a grin or smirk on their faces, or they may even smile, to mock the victim. As to the evil figure, they tend to have a good posture to establish dominance unlike their enemy (the victim) where they may seem distant and all curled up to protect themselves.

Lighting:
Mostly, the lighting is obscure and the tense scenes are set at night, to link darkness with evil occurrences. The use of shadows through low-key lighting is also very common to create mystery towards the audience.
