Meaning of sound
RESEARCH BEHIND THE USE OF SOUND IN HORROR MOVIES
I carried out a thorough investigation in order to learn how to create and apply the music and sound effects that I wanted to use. I took into account both diegetic and non diegetic music when researching, in order to make sure that when I film, all the diegetic sound can be heard. I started by researching how the stereotypical horror music and sound effects were created (their history). I came across the video down below which basically summed up the meaning of sound in this genre:
After watching this video, I not only learnt about the evolution of horror movie music, but now have some ideas that I want to apply to the music and sounds in my movie. As you know, my main inspiration for the style of mise en scene is Alfred Hitchcock. The music used in Psycho is what began the concept of 'jumpscare', which is the sudden burst of sound linked to the action carried out in the scene, (similar to stab). I want to incorporate this idea in my movie at the end, to leave the audience feeling uncomfortable but wanting to know what happens next.
